IMAGE VOLUME

YALE SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE, ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN 1

CRITIC: NIKOLE BOUCHARD

FALL 2020

IN THE TRANSITION FROM IMAGE OBJECT TO IMAGE VOLUME, I USED STACKED HORIZONTAL PLANES AND STRING-LIKE VERTICAL PLANES, KEEPING WITH THE IDEA OF THE SUM OF MANY PARTS TO FORM THE WHOLE MUCH IN THE WAY PRIYA AHLUWALIA USES MANY DIFFERENT PATCHES OF RECYCLED FABRICS TO FORM ONE COHESIVE JUMPSUIT. AS SHOWN IN MY SCENOGRAPHIC MODEL, THE SPACE ITSELF IS QUITE DYNAMIC IN ITS INTERIOR. IT FEELS CARVED OUT AND RATHER INTIMATE AS ONE TRAVERSES WITHIN THE PLANES OF THE LOWER VOLUME, BUT WITHIN THE OPEN AREA BETWEEN THE TWO VOLUMES, WHICH LOOKS UP INTO THE CARVED OUT SPACE ABOVE, A SENSE OF MONUMENTALITY ARISES.
